Chapter 29
PART FIVE - ST. ALBANS
At eleven thirty the following morning, Sofia and Elizabeth finally arrived at St Albans. Marcus was already at the bus stop, his greeting warm as he hugged them. For all of his expressions of disappointment she hadnât made it home to her family, his beaming smile told her he was ecstatic that sheâd returned to Talonsgate.
âYou will be able to write to them, Sofia, tell them whatâs happened,â he said.
âMarcus.â Elizabethâs tone held the undercurrent of a warning, and she shook her head. âLetâs just get home.â
Marcus had set up small tables in the lounge, where the fire blazed cozily. âYou relax in here, Sofia. I want to see the horses before we eat. How are they, Marcus?â
Sofia had no doubt Elizabethâs question was a cue for Marcus to walk and talk with her. As they looked at the horses, Marcus would be informed of Sofiaâs recollections about her family since theyâd left Spain.
What on earth would Marcus make of it all? Sheâd dragged his sister halfway across Europe, distracted her from her wedding arrangements and her horses and even endangered herâall to pursue a figment of Sofiaâs imagination. Marcus might think she should be re-admitted to Napsbury Hospital, for clearly her mind was far from mended.
Even more troubling was a feeling that the revelations about her father and brother had only been half of it; deep within her was a foreboding of more to come. Memories which held the key to her illnessâthe events that led to her hospitalization. Her greatest fear was that should these return, her mind would once again unravel.
Looking around the room, warmed by the fire, Sofia realised she was glad to be back at Talonsgate, where all was so steady and solid in her surroundings, whatever happened within her.
âAlright, Sofia, time to eat!â Marcus exclaimed when he and Elizabeth finally returned.
Sofia opened her eyes; in the time theyâd been away, sheâd dropped off to sleep.
In his hands he carried a large pot of stew, and behind him, Elizabeth was carrying the butter dish and a plate holding bread rolls.
âElizabeth tells me you two have had quite an adventure. You will have to tell me everything!â
Marcus filled their bowls and they passed the bread rolls around and, deciding against sitting at the table, they relaxed in the oversized chairs in the lounge. Lunch evolved into afternoon tea, and as the room darkened and lamps were lit, their tea and cake were replaced with cheese, biscuits and glasses of red wine. As they ate and drank the day away, Elizabeth and Sofia recounted the details of their journey. They bypassed any references to the setback Sofia had experienced their first night in Paris, and understated the severity of the bombing in Barcelona. However, their voices were filled with excitement as they told Marcus about their good fortune in meeting Lauren and Lucien and described how theyâd helped to load the Spanish artworks for evacuation to Geneva.
âGood heavens! Good luck? What with
